Phase I Orthodontics in Corona, CA

At our practice, our goal is to help children grow into healthy, confident smiles through early guidance, careful monitoring and trusted pediatric dental care. Interceptive orthodontics focuses on growth, spacing and bite development while a child still has baby teeth. This type of care is often called Phase I orthodontics.

Dr. R. James Richardson II may recommend early orthodontic appliances when a child has a narrow upper jaw, crowding, crossbite or limited space for adult teeth. As a pediatric dental office, our pediatric dentist and team do not provide Phase II orthodontic treatment, such as full braces or clear aligners for complete tooth alignment. When that level of care is needed, we help guide families toward the right orthodontic specialist.

How Early Orthodontic Appliances Can Help

Interceptive appliances are designed to guide growth while the jaws are still developing. This early approach may help create more space, improve bite function and reduce the complexity, length or cost of future orthodontic care.

Common early appliances may include:

  • Rapid palatal expander (RPE): An RPE gently widens the upper jaw to help correct a narrow palate, improve space for adult teeth and support better bite alignment.
  • Schwarz appliance: A Schwarz appliance is a removable device that may help guide jaw growth, create room for developing teeth and support a healthier arch shape.
  • Space-guiding appliances: These appliances may help keep the mouth on track as baby teeth fall out and adult teeth begin to erupt.

These appliances do not replace future orthodontic treatment. However, they can make Phase II treatment with an orthodontist more efficient in some cases.

A Thoughtful Approach for Growing Smiles

Every child develops at a different pace. During your child's visit, our pediatric dentist will evaluate tooth eruption, jaw growth, bite patterns and oral habits. If early care is recommended, we will explain the appliance, timeline and home-care steps in clear terms.

Parents often appreciate that interceptive orthodontics may:

  • Support better jaw development
  • Create more room for permanent teeth
  • Help correct certain bite concerns early
  • Reduce the chance of more complex care later
  • Make future orthodontic treatment shorter or simpler

A Schwarz appliance is removable and helps guide arch development. It may be used when a child needs more space or gentle growth support.

Possibly. Early care may reduce the time, cost or complexity of future orthodontic treatment, but some children still need braces or aligners with an orthodontist.
